Centrist accidentally demonstrates overwhelming historical tendency of centrists to side with fascists

While an apt demonstration, I wonder what makes this particular pattern hold. What makes the political center of human societies more likely to prefer authoritarian nationalism. I don’t believe it’s nature, so what social phenomena are the cause? And what would it take to make the opposite true?
