She does not remember signing a consent form, but remembers her upset husband saying, “I’m not signing that!” to medical staff. After the surgery, the doctor said, “cut, tied and burned. There. Nothing is getting through that.”
Across Canada and as recently as 2017, Indigenous women report being forcibly or coercively sterilized. Some women were incorrectly told the procedure is reversible. Others were separated from their babies until they consented to a tubal ligation.
Forced and coerced sterilizations of Indigenous women are a result of systemic violence and discrimination against Indigenous peoples in the provision of public services in Canada, a pattern well known and acknowledged by government. They are an assault on Indigenous women, their families, their communities, and their Nations that have already been subjected to forced assimilation through colonialism, including eugenic practices.
Sterilizing women without their free, full, and informed consent is a form of violence and torture. Measures to prevent births within ethnic or racial groups is explicitly prohibited by the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide.
All women have the human right to make decisions around if, when, and how to create a family. All women have a right to live free from violence and discrimination. All women have a right to health.
We ask the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, to take immediate action to end sterilizations of Indigenous women without their consent. We ask Trudeau:
Investigates the scope and scale of this pattern of rights violations;
Ensures non-repetition to make sure this practice is halted once and for all;

I do live in a universal health care country, actually. And I HAVE had a necessary operation here myself. I broke my arm years ago – the ambulance came within 5 minutes. I was seen in A&E by a doctor within 20 minutes. And I had the operation to put my arm back in place within hours – despite my condition not being life threatening. Hmm, don’t see what was so hard about that? And oh yeah, it was all free of charge.
You don’t seem to understand about how it works. Firstly, operations are prioritised. If someone comes in with an emergency, such as a ruptured aorta and bleeding out – of COURSE they will get an operation STRAIGHT AWAY. Like what do you think doctors do here, twiddle their thumbs while patients die?
And if someone has something that is not quite an emergency, but is serious, such as a bowel cancer, they will have their surgery within 1-2 weeks of seeing a specialist. And it’s free. The poor patient who is already stressed and worried sick about their cancer, will NOT also have to worry about insurance and bills and going bankrupt.
Sure, some operations that are not quite as urgent will have waiting lists. My gran just had her cataract operation – this is something that isn’t life-threatening, not causing her pain at all, but of course is still affecting her life because she couldn’t see very well. She had to wait a few months, which of course in an inconvenience, but she still got her operation, and she definitely didn’t have to wait years (and I have never heard of anyone waiting years for an operation, and as a med student I have talked to a LOT of patients) so I don’t know where you got that from (probably some right-wing american media, I assume). And like, I’m sure most people would rather wait a bit longer than have to pay, or not ever get their operation because they can’t afford it?
And I’m not sure what you mean by your last bit. Are you really implying that countries other than the US couldn’t repair an ACL tear? Like, really? Do you think countries with universal healthcare have no resources or money? Sorry to burst your deluded bubble, but other countries can handle an ACL tear, and many other operations (even neurosurgery – shock horror!), just fine thanks. I’ve never seen a patient shipped off to America.

As someone who would be dead, many times over, without universal health care, GET FUCKED.
And for the record: the only private hospital in my hometown (apart from taking quick non urgent NMR because the ones in the public hospital have quite a long queue) really sucks. For every important/urgent/non-basic procedure you have to go to the public one, which is considered btw a national reference in certain departments. Years for an operation? Nop. Months, one year and a few months tops for non-necessary surgeries. Urgent and necessary? Hours.
Oh and about the talking shit thing…
But sure, the US wins it over in one thing: healthcare spending!

You could say “Zionists encouraged it!” but many Jews who fled MENA were not Zionist and wanted to stay where they were. But property theft, mass executions of Jews who were labelled “Zionist” regardless of their personal beliefs, pogroms and the belief in “pan-Arabism,” a unification of MENA peoples under one religion and ethnicity, made Jewish life impossible and flight necessary.
So now there is a significant population of non-White Jews in Israel, many of whom are Zionists, some of whom claim that Zionism saved their lives. Today, a majority of the world’s Mizrachi Jews live in Israel, and because they live in Israel, the adherents of BDS have decided that they are to be denied voices in academia and culture.
In other words, BDS silences Mizrachi Jews. Mizrachi Jews who manage to get their voices heard are accused of being White Supremacists. Because they suffered exile by non-White populations, people on the left who don’t feel confident in criticizing those in power in MENA lest they be feeding orientalist stereotypes choose to stay silent lest they face ostracism for being insufficiently anti-racist (even if that means being racist against Mizrachim who despite rhetoric against oppression olympics, really don’t seem to rate in the hierarchies of the left).
So what happens is that Mizrachim end up tokenized as a tool to attack other Jews while having their own voices ignored. Racism against Mizrachim in Israel becomes not a type of oppression to be fought, but just another piece of evidence that Israel is evil and Mizrachim don’t deserve solidarity unless they are in favor of destroying the country that, however flawed, played a role in saving their lives.
The Israeli left, like much of the global left, can come down with really bad tunnel vision when reality comes into conflict with its ideals and tunes out voices that risk complicating the purity of that vision.
The global left doesn’t see Mizrachim as real Jews. They see them as a distraction from the hated White European Imperialist Jew who are only as useful as their willingness to perpetuate that narrative, their own value as human beings be damned.
