EXCLUSIVE: CNN poll reveals depth of anti-Semitism in Europe
Uhm what the fuck
“Lack of Holocaust knowledge is particularly striking among young people in France: One out of five people there between the ages of 18 and 34 said they’d never heard of it.” ummmm what the actual fuck???????????
I actually know the reasoning behind this.
Story time: My french teacher back in highschool made us do a whole segment on France during WW2. There was a terrible event in France when Germany “occupied” Paris (it was more like France simply allowed Germany to just take the jews besides being forcefully taken over) and Germany took jews from their homes (along with the help of FRENCH POLICE) and placed them in The Velodrome D’hiver, which is basically a giant stadium used for bicycle races (I think.). The whole thing was known as La Rafle (the roundup) and Jews were kept in this shitty stadium for a pretty long time (I can’t exactly remember how long) some were committing suicide by jumping off the top rafters, the sounds of bodies hitting the ground was frequent and there were almost no bathrooms, and there was only one tap for water. The only people allowed in and out were the red cross. They soon shipped all of the people out of the stadium to another internment camp, then to extermination camps (aka places like Auschwitz) but the main awful thing was that 44% of the people were women and 31% were children, though true estimates vary, this seems generally agreed.
So after this happened, France pretended it didn’t after the war was over. They were so fucking ashamed of their history. If you asked someone about La Rafle, they’ll either not understand what the hell you’re talking about, or will just vehemently refuse to talk about it.
Emmanuel Macron was the most recent president to speak out about France’s role in the holocaust, the one before being Jacques Chirac in 1995.
It’s fucked up. France should be ashamed, but they shouldn’t act like it never happened. That’s how we repeat our mistakes.
There’s a french movie that retells this event in the eyes of a young jewish child literally called La Rafle or The Round Up. It’s a heavy film, I seriously reccomend watching it.
