Before you contact your MP or your local municipal government (which you CAN do):
– Find out if there are any safe city initiatives near to you & if they need any help with training sessions, spreading the word, etc.
– Find out where the nearest immigrant detention centre is to you and, if it is more than an hour away, look instead to your nearest pre-trial facility for more information about where temporary or off-site holding cells are located.
-*if you have time on your hands* FOIs! See if there are any workshops near you on how to file a Freedom of Information request. If you are not able to find data that should be publicly available to you online ie. number of children detained by CBSA for longer than 3 months in a given year, file a request.
Be prepared to give your local representatives a quick summary of what you’ve found is going on in your municipality. The more you say it the easier it’ll be to summarise quickly.
