I just realised that the production company that did To all the boys I’ve loved before was actually Will Smith’s. That means Will Smith wasl the one producer who did not whitewash Lara Jean and said an Asian-american actress can play her. There was no white saviour producer here apnd the fact it was Will Smith speaks volumes.
TV: That’s definitely something I was curious about with this film; on the Crazy Rich Asians press tour, author Kevin Kwan was talking about how a producer suggested that he change the lead to a white woman. Did that ever come up in the casting for this?
JH [Jenny Han, author of the book]: Yes. Not with the people I ended up working with, but early on, the same thing happened. To me, the more alarming part of it was that people didn’t understand why that was an issue.
That’s why we gotta have more POC behind the scenes with power!

Side note:
(You could really tell that a woman wrote that movie.)
