I’ve been reading a lot of criticisms of Israel Rank and Kind Hearts and Coronets in prep for the podcast episode. One thing that stuck out- unfortunately- to me was a comment that changing the ethnicity of the protagonist from Jewish to Italian made the story more “universal.”
Look, there are valid arguments to be made in favor of not portraying a Jewish serial killer, but I’m not sure “Jews are less universal than Italians” is one of them.
i dont actually know what this is about but like yeah
good reasons to not have a jewish serial killer: you avoid evoking blood libel type stories about a jewish person
bad reasons: make the story more universal??? as if jewish people dont deserve to have jewish characters bc it alienates others???
