Ebony Donnelly at Afropunk 2018. He was kicked out of VIP for wearing this shirt. The shirt says “Afropunk sold out for white consumption”.
He’s absolutely right and he should say it
I didn’t see any white people when I went. Their biggest problem is colorism and fatphobia.
This isn’t about white people attending this about giving jobs to white people where black poc could be working those same jobs. It’s about the way people are policed. It’s about the cost of tickets going up and therefore excluding more black poc. It’s about the exploitation of black artists, content creators and photographers who are used for free advertising and not compensated or even tagged on posts. It’s about how inaccessible the space is both physically and financially. They say no ableism yet they make it inaccessible. They say speak truth to power yet they silence the voices of black lgbtq. They’ve sold out and rather than engage in conversation they aggressively remove us from spaces.
