This is why Orange Shirt Day matters. This is why it"s important. It was started in honor of all the lives that were lost and tarnished by the forceful removal of Indigenous children from their homes by the Candian government. The children were made to stay in deplorable conditions and told to forget their customs and language. Thousands of children died and thousands more had parts of them die as a direct result of these “schools”
Orange Shirt Day was started in 2013 and is named after Phyllis Webstad vivid memory of her brand new orange shirt being removed from her body the moment she stepped into the Misson school in the mid 70’s.
