also science would support only darker skinned mermaids, esp. if they are in the pelagic zone or in reefs, they would need the melanin in their skin to withstand the sunlight on/in the water and not be burnt to a crisp. if we’re going all sciencey, the white mermaids would be the ones in the deepest parts of the ocean chillin by those hydrothermal vents and they wouldnt be able to get close enough to the surface to hit on princes without the change in pressure killing them.
