Staying alive is a mitzvah and my struggles are Jewish values

nerdyqueerandjewish:

magen-ruth:

“A Tumblr user wrote something I have been considering: “Tikkun halev (repair of the heart) is necessary for tikkun olam.” So maybe subconsciously, I was thinking about the mitzvah of staying alive. And even if it was to do other things, to meet other mitzvot like tikkun olam, I was most assuredly meeting the mitzvah of staying alive.

There are a lot of things I meant to be doing during Elul and the High Holidays. Things I thought embodied Jewish values far more than merely struggling with day to day existence… [but] My struggles to participate in traditional Jewish life as I fight to stay alive do not mark me as less Jewish. These struggles are equally Jewish.”

I updated the WordPress URL and title. And wrote this when I was despairing over having not done enough during Elul and the opening of the High Holidays.

Know that your work is important! Whoever saves a single life is considered by Scripture to have saved the whole world (Mishnah Sanhedrin 4:5; Yerushalmi Talmud 4:9, Babylonian Talmud Sanhedrin 37). That includes your life too! 💜
