it’s made so difficult to get a job once one is finally out of prison that it’s far easier to just get arrested and work for the prison system again as you did before.

This is a significant part of why the recidivism rate in the USA is so high.

It’s also exceptionally hard to find a place to live. After my non got out, we were trying to find a place together and no rental agency would take us and many private renters refused once they found out about her record.

at the end of the day you’re going to suffer for life regardless of the crime. this sadly means the poor and the vulnerable in prison for trivial things like marijuana possession are forced into poverty

they do not want their laborers [prisoners] free, they rely on this labor, as do the capitalists of the world.

think you don’t use slave labour?

look at your hershey’s chocolate, your nestle anything, victoria’s secret, most things labelled ‘made in the USA’, license plates, off-brand cigarettes, military gear, whole foods farmed fish…
