Listen, as a disabled person sometimes you have to tell yourself “no, I can’t do that today”
You have to tell yourself “it costs me too much”
Or “it’s not working for me”
And whether that’s university. Or a relationship. Or a hobby you took up. As a disabled person you HAVE TO learn to give up
The world teaches us to never give up but that’s not how disability works, not how our bodies and our lifes work.
Giving up is not a bad thing. It’s a skill as any else, and it’s a useful skill to have in pain management. Giving up is essential to surviving as a disabled person in a hostile world made for abled people.
So don’t let any “the only disability is a bad attitude” type Facebook mom make you think you can’t give up on stuff. For each thing you decided to ditch you can now focus on something that’s more important and easier for you, and you’re allowed to be weak and enjoy your life AS A DISABLED PERSON.
We don’t have to strive to not appear disabled. To not appear like we can’t do stuff. We can’t, that’s what disability is. I can’t walk. That’s why I’m disabled. And it’s okay. It’ll be okay.
Giving up is not the end of the world but it may be a start of less painful, exhausting life for you
