This is nothing new, either. In the early 1960s, Howard Zinn was fired from his position as head of the history department of Spelman College (improperly, I should add, he had tenure) for refusing to stop the (black, female) students from organizing protests, boycotts, and direct action against segregation in Atlanta, and in fact aiding them in their efforts. At Boston University, the administration, in reaction to his left-wing and anti-war views, tried to pressure him to resign by denying him raises and even teaching assistants (he was an extremely popular professor with classes of hundreds of students, making this an incredibly difficult teaching arrangement for him).

File under: good, now there’s data.
