hopefully the next thing gen z/millennials kill are unpaid internships because those things are evil and radiate the most demonic energy
for those who are gonna comment: “but they help with experience!!1!!1”,, sure, in some aspects an unpaid internship can help a young person get more familiar with the field they want to get into. BUT, unpaid experience doesn’t pay the bills.
the worst part about unpaid internships is that it’s not for every financial situation. being in high school, I would feel so left out to hear my peers talk about their cool *unpaid* internships at headquarters and political offices. I became envious of how great their college apps would look while mines would have….. no mentions of interning at those cool places.
but I knew that if I decided to work for free instead of getting a job that PAID, it wouldn’t benefit me or my family. the kids who were able to participate in unpaid internship could because it wouldn’t hurt their family’s financial situation. for the most part, people who are able to work for free can go home later on, and not have to worry about how it’ll tamper with how their family will pay the bills and basic necessities next month.
companies who exploit young people for their skills in technology, communication, etc are sick, and hopefully this sick trend that lingers among our generation will be put to an end. If a company is using someone to work for a consecutive amount of hours in order to utilize a set of skills that will put the company at an advantage….. they NEED to get paid. point blank. working for free should NEVER be normalized. fuck the “experience”, if I’m working for you, please pay me bitch!! if I’m using ANY type of skill for HOURS that’ll help your company or cause, please pay me bitch!!
now that I’m out of high school, I am no longer envious of the kids who worked for FREE because it would look better on college apps. (bc thankfully I still managed to get into a good school). Instead, I am infuriated at the companies who took advantage of their knowledge and skills, when those companies damn well had the money to give PAID internships. experience and exposure is cute, but they need to start running us our money.
