Cass Elliot was an absolutely gorgeous and unbelievably talented fat woman. She was known for her charisma and sense of humor and her incredible vocal talent was arguably responsible for the massive success of the Mamas & the Papas in the 60s.
Cass passed away in her sleep in 1974 at just 32, leaving behind her 7 year old daughter. Soon after they found her, one cruel doctor (before an autopsy was even conducted) saw fit to tell reporters she probably died choking on an (untouched) ham sandwich they found by her bed. (Cass’s real cause of death was heart failure. They believe now her heart was likely weakened by the crash diets she frequently went on attempting to lose weight.)
This tragedy happened over 40 years ago, and STILL TO THIS DAY the ham sandwich rumor is spread around and used to make fun of her. It makes me sick to my stomach when I hear people say these things. It’s like one last cruel joke made at the expense of a fat woman who was ridiculed her entire life by her band mates and the public and was never once given the credit she deserved for her talent. Even FORTY YEARS LATER these assholes can’t just let this woman finally rest in peace.
There isn’t really a question coming, but Cass is one of my favorite singers and I just really try whenever I can to set the record straight about her and her life so more people will remember her as the beautiful, funny, fat, gifted, and utterly unique individual she was and not just by a nasty, fatphobic rumor. Considering all the fatphobia she had to endure in life, I know it would have devastated her to know that this was the only way she would be remembered by so many people.
Rest In Peace Cass Elliot. Always dreaming little dreams of you. (September 19, 1941 – July 29, 1974)
