You could write a story where the main cast is entirely dark skinned, muscular and/or fat, and non conventionally attractive but the second there’s one pretty young skinny white boy in some way, that character is 85% of the fanart and the fanfiction

And in some cases, when a story lacks a white man to fawn over, people just go for literally any non-human thing (example: the crab from Moana)
